Otters show power swings, power arms in exhibition win

The Evansville Otters won by a 5-1 final score Tuesday morning against the Gateway Grizzlies to kick off the 2022 Spring Training exhibition season.

Tuesday was the Otters’ first game action since the 2021 regular-season finale.

Gateway scored the first run of the game in the top of the first off an RBI hit from Jose Rosario, resulting in Gateway’s lone run of the game.

Parker Brahms got the start for Evansville, striking out four in the first two innings.

Justin Watland pitched a scoreless third and fourth innings.

Evansville tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run from Jeffrey Baez.

In the next home inning for Evansville, Justin Felix went deep for a two-run shot to push the Otters ahead 3-1.

Ryan Campbell, Tyler Spring, and Joe Riley threw up zeroes for innings five through seven.

In the bottom of the seventh, Gary Mattis cracked a two-run home run of his own, giving the Otters a 5-1 advantage.

Joe Riley pitched a scoreless eighth before Logan Sawyer struck out the side in the ninth.

Gateway finished with five hits, while Evansville had seven.

Evansville and Gateway will match up again Wednesday morning at 10:45 a.m. for an exhibition at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill.

The two teams will return to Bosse Field Friday for a 6:35 p.m. exhibition. Tickets are on sale at evansvilleotters.com.

The Evansville Otters are the 2006 and 2016 Frontier League champions.
