People who raise dairy goats each have their own reasons. Only you can decide what draws you into raising dairy goats, but here are some common reasons:

• To have their own source of dairy products and know what went into them
• You enjoy raising goats and spending time with them
• Because goats are very personable animals and engage well with people 
• Because you have a cow milk allergy but aren’t allergic to goat’s milk 
• Because goats are smaller than cows and easier for a new livestock owner to handle
• It’s a fantastic way to teach children responsibility 
• It promotes critical thinking as you face and address issues with your goats
• Because goat owners love a good challenge and goats offer that, in abundance

We should mention making a little money on the side. We include this for completeness and it’s true that dairy goat owners can enjoy a little pocket money by selling products made from goat milk, (and perhaps even live animals). But fair warning – if this is your main reason, then we’d suggest other easier and less messy hobbies! Few dairy goat owners turn this into a full business that will pay the bills.
