United Way Hosts 27th Annual Day of Caring

Mayor Winnecke announces McGary Jones Award Winner at event

United Way of Southwestern Indiana hosts its first in-person Day of Caring since the COVID-19 pandemic forced cancellations and postponements. More than 400 volunteers signed up to assist two dozen nonprofits with a variety of projects throughout Vanderburgh and Warrick counties. After a hot breakfast and inspirational program at Old National Events Plaza, the volunteers were dispersed to their respective nonprofits.

During the event, Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke named local businessman and philanthropist, Wayne Kinney, as the recipient of the McGary Jones Visionary and Humanitarian Award winner. Mr. Kinney and family helped bring the penguin exhibit to Mesker Park Zoo, has been an ardent supporter of Easterseals Rehabilitation Center, and has been instrumental in the ongoing efforts to improve access to mental health care, among many other charitable projects.

The event is the largest single-day volunteer event in the region. United Way will host an even larger Day of Caring event, on September 16th, 2022 as the organization celebrates its 100th Anniversary.
